Particle hosted its annual Spectra conference last month, bringing together over 1000 developers, engineers, and IoT enthusiasts for three jam-packed days of learning, networking, and fun in San Francisco. This was our biggest and best Spectra yet, with attendees from all over the world digitally coming together to explore the future of IoT.
Highlights from Spectra 2023
The highlight of the event was Zach Supalla’s keynote where he unveiled our brand new Wi-Fi development board, the Photon 2. This next-generation board builds on everything developers loved about the original Photon, with upgrades like a faster processor, more memory, and larger user firmware binaries. We gave attendees a sneak peek of the Photon 2’s capabilities during some live demos on stage. Judging by how quickly we sold out, developers are extremely excited to get their hands on these new boards!
We also made several other major announcements during the keynote:
- The launch of our new Edge ML Developer Kit, which enables developers to easily add ML capabilities like anomaly detection and predictive maintenance to their connected devices.
- The release of Monitor One, a customizable IoT gateway designed to interface with sensors and collect data from the physical environment. It serves as a field-ready gateway that can be integrated into various industrial and outdoor IoT applications, with durable construction capable of withstanding harsh conditions.
- EtherSIM support for Verizon, allowing Particle IoT devices using EtherSIM to now connect to Verizon’s network in addition to T-Mobile.
In addition to Zach’s keynote, there were over 40 breakout sessions where developers learned about topics ranging from security and privacy to design for manufacturability. Popular hands-on workshops gave attendees experience with Particle hardware, cloud, and developer tools

More Photon 2’s Coming End of July!
Of course, the hot topic coming out of Spectra was the Photon 2 announcement. We gave away a limited number of the new boards to attendees and understandably we completely sold out quickly!
The good news is that Photon 2 production is ramping up, and more will be available in the Particle Store starting July 16th. Quantities may still be limited at first as we scale up manufacturing, so be sure to grab yours early if you want to be among the first to develop with this cutting-edge new Wi-Fi board.
